• It is no secret that the best time of year to enjoy woodlands and forests is autumn. The multicoloured falling leaves create a magical scene, as if it does rain at least you’ve got a little bit of shelter! Planning to visit us this fall? Here is a selection of the finest Lake District woodlands.

    1. Craggy Woods
Craggy Wood overlooks the picturesque village of Staveley which is a short 18 minute drive from Ambleside. This wood is dominated by huge beautiful Oak trees on steep slopes. A truly natural adventure playground, craggy woods has many dens and rope swings and ‘whomping willow’ like trees for children to enjoy. Plus being only a short walk from Staveley village you can always grab tea and cake afterwards at one of the lovely cafes in Staveley mill yard.

    2. Skelgyhll Woods
Skelgyhll Woods are right on our doorstep, only a short walk from Ambleside pier. This ancient woodland sits above the lake and town. What’s great about this walk is Jenkin’s Cragg view point, a picturesque spot offering delightful views of the lake. Interestingly Skelgyhll Woods is home to the tallest Grand Fir tree in England. See if you can spot it! Plus if you’re peckish afterwards, why not pop into our sister hotel The Regent Hotel for lunch? They serve fresh, delicious seasonal dishes.

    3. Rayrigg Woods
Rayrigg Wood is a hidden gem! It is accessible via a small path between Windermere and Bowness, approximately a 15 minute drive from Ambleside. Rayrigg woods is stunning at this time of year and really does feel like untouched natural beauty. There is a stream that runs alongside the pathway adding to the tranquility. This is a great place to enjoy with family and friends and if you have the energy to walk all the way through the wood it will be worth it! Rayrigg Wyke’s viewpoint is the reward at the far end.
