• It’s no surprise the Lake District has played a starring role on the silver screen. Over the years, the lovely Lakes has been the backdrop to a number of films. Thanks to the area’s stunning scenery, lush landscapes and jaw-dropping views, it’s easy to understand why it has been chosen as a film location time after time.

Here are eight that were filmed right on our doorstep.

    Swallows and Amazons
The majestic Cumbria scenery provided the backdrop for the latest adaptation of the film released last year. Coniston Water is where the four explorers set sail for Peel Island, or 'Wild Cat Island' as it's known in the film. If you’re a fan of the movie, you can step aboard the ‘real’ Captain Flint’s houseboat, on a Steam Yacht Gondola. If you want to make a day of it, you can cruise along the east shore of Coniston to view landmarks connected to the story and which appear in the film. The cast and crew also paid a visit to Derwentwater in Borrowdale, while the film premier was held at Theatre by the Lake.

    Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Scenes showing a formation of low-flying spacecraft skimming the surface of the water were in fact shot at Derwentwater. The scenes were included in the first full length trailer of the movie, which was released in 2015, and racked up an incredible 88 million views in its first 24 hours online.

    Miss Potter
Hollywood A-listers Renée Zellwegger and Ewan McGregor starred in the 2007 biopic which was filmed near Sawrey. The stunning scenery includes footage of Hill Top and Loughrigg Tarn, which was adored by Wordsworth.

    Snow White and The Huntsman
An all-star cast of Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, the late Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone and Eddie Izzard - who were all spotted enjoying drinks and dinner in Windermere more than once. Scenes for the 2012 movie were filmed at locations including Cathedral Cave in Little Langdale, Blea Tarn and the Langdale Pikes.

    28 Days Later
Who would’ve thought the Lake District was the best place to flee zombies? Director Danny Boyle chose Ennerdale as the location for the closing scenes of the 1997 film, in which survivors take shelter in a farmhouse. The scenes show the magnificent location in all its splendour, with stunning panoramic cinematography.

    The French Lieutenant’s Woman
This 1981 movie starring Jeremy Irons and Meryl Streep was nominated for five Oscars and features scenes shot in Windermere at the end. The location of choice was Broad Leys, a large Arts & Crafts style house overlooking Lake Windermere.

    Withnail and I
Famous for the line ‘we’ve gone on holiday by mistake', this black comedy was shot at an isolated farmhouse known as Sleddale Hall. The 1987 film features shots of the beautiful landscapes that surround the village of Shap.

This film, released in 2001 and starring John Hannah and Samantha Morton, follows the lives of William Wordsworth, Samuel Coleridge and other Romantic poets.
