• Did we mention we LOVE the Lake District?

Chances are, you’ve probably heard us say it before, but we genuinely do mean it when we say that we absolutely adore where we live and work, here at Lakes Lodge.

We feel so lucky to be based somewhere that is widely considered to be a national treasure – both in the UK and beyond. Even as the dark nights and drizzly days are drawing in and we’re bidding farewell to the last of the September sunshine (that was an added bonus, wasn’t it?) we love the Lakes, come rain or shine.

This brings us to why we thought we’d write a blog about the fantastic things you can do if the weather is a bit chilly or rainy. We regularly welcome guests from up and down the UK and abroad, in all seasons, and we love to share our recommendations with them. So today, we’re sharing them with you so that you can plan a lovely getaway to come and see for yourself how wonderful this part of the country is…

    Watch incredible waterfalls
Waterfalls can be even more dramatic in the pouring rain. Grab your best waterproof jacket and check out the waterfalls at Tom Gill in Coniston, Rydal Falls and Stock Ghyll Force in Ambleside. You could also try the Elterwater Waterfalls Walk taking in Skelwith Force and Colwith Force.

    Animal magic
You could visit one of the many open farms across the area, such as Ducky Park or Low Sizergh Barn. Alternatively head to the South Lakes Wild Animal Park, Lakeland Wildlife Oasis or Lakes Aquarium.

    Become a culture vulture
Explore the brilliant art galleries, museums and many other indoor attractions we have on our doorstep (even better, many let kids go free!) Check out Holker Hall, Levens Hall, Sizergh Castle and Blackwell.

    Adrenaline rush
Try your hand at a spot of rock climbing at Kendal Climbing Wall or Keswick Climbing Wall. Or channel your inner Lewis Hamilton and go to West Coast Indoor Karting in Maryport where there’s a 520m full indoor racing circuit; 40mph adult karts and 25mph kids karts.

    Marvellous museums
We have a number of great museums. You could visit the Lakeland Motor Museum, or the Laurel and Hardy Museum in Ulverston. The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction in Windermere is also incredibly popular!

    Indoor fun
If the weather is really unbearable, you can always stay indoors for the day and head to The Rheged Centre in Penrith. There are indoor play areas and activities, specialist shops and short 3D Films for the whole family. You could also catch a movie at local venues in Ambleside, Bowness on Windermere, Ulverston, Kendal and Beetham. Alternatively, retail therapy could be the answer to weather woes. We’re lucky to have a fabulous choice of all the big brands alongside independents. We also have the flagship Lakeland store in Windermere which is fantastic, and even boasts a wonderful little café too.

If you need accommodation for your winter getaway, why not stay with us at Lakes Lodge? We’re in the perfect location for a Lake District trip. Contact us or find our best prices here.
